January 09 From the Desk of Loki...
Today I received a letter in the mail with an envelope of a graphite hue. Enclosed in this envelope was a memo, and a much smaller envelope self containing a 256MB flash drive. The memo in the envelope states the following:
Contained on the flash device are three files:
So what is this all about? 'The Vanishing Point Game', it's a contest with puzzles and prizes. Events around the world are to occur at specific times and giving clues to help solve puzzles and earn points. Last night an event occurred in Las Vegas at the 2007 CES event which unlocked the first Puzzle Box. Some of the puzzles are hard to figure out, but there's lots of people who are getting involved and helping one another. The prizes are great! Grand Prize is the ultimate vista: a three to four minute sensation of weightlessness 100 kilometers straight up into SPACE. What's cooler then that! Tons of other great prize too, lots of hardware and software to be given away... and this, a bonus prize; One lucky person will receive a signature chip meaning their name will be inscribed on each and every AMD Athlon 64 FX chip made from the time of the award through to the end of March '07. There's lots of support around for solving these puzzles, as many people are quite active on this at Neowin. If you do sign up, please put me as a referral person in the registration process. Vanishing Point: http://vanishingpointgame.com/ Hey, good luck and if you need any help just let me know. Peace, ~Jason November 07 official Windows Vista Preview magazine
A few of days ago I received an email notifying me that I was not a loser, thanks for the email Mom!… just kidding.
The email was a congratulatory message informing me that I was a lucky winner in a prize giveaway. Undoubtedly we all received these types of email claiming prize & fortune, so thinking this is spam like it usually is I dis-regard it.
Days later I’m reading a few blogs then see my name... amoung 5 lucky people to receive a copy of the official Windows Vista Preview magazine published by Future. Sweet!
So, props to Long Zheng for hosting the contest on his blog! you can check it out here: http://www.istartedsomething.com/
~Jason October 04 pre-PTThank you all for your heart felt comments. I love you guys.
Late Blog posting…
11:51am Oct 4th Boarded 5mins ago and traveling towards Seattle currently on the TransCanada #1 Highway.
I’m feeling a lot better now. My father drove me to the bus depot and we spoke briefly of his fathers passing on the way. I was early for the bus and sat outside smoking and in tears (kicking myself too). A woman came to the secluded area for a cigarette. Her name was Marian, a mother of 2, a wife, a daughter to an ailing mother. We talked about religion, sickness and life. She was a very nice person whom helped me clear my mind and put things into another perspective.
The bus is now exiting the highway bound for the border. Drats! My MP3 player is not working… 4 hours with my thoughts; this will be a long ride.
11:00 pm Oct 4th I’m at the Hilton, checked in earlier and then headed off the meet up with people and catch a ride to the Claim Jumper. About ten of us in the lobby, everyone is really friendly. Errrg, I’ve got a massive headache brewing. We arrived at the restaurant and I managed to track down some pain pills for my head, started feeling much better but no appetite. Paul Donnelly and his wife were there, and pretty entertaining. Fun fact: the number of bugs submitted on Connect totals 61,000 up to date (this includes dupes, take into account 31k testers… this shows many inactive testers
I’m now at the hotel in the Business Center now, all alone, this is costing me a logon fee and per min use so I should go, save some $$… off to the lounge for a drink then to bed.
~Jason Oct 4, 2006An hour before I leave for the bus, ain’t feeling so good.
Last night I had a hard time sleeping, lots of anxiety, tossed and turned thinking about life and stuff, and now I‘ve just learned of my grandfathers passing. Donald Jorgensen, 91. Recent and rapid development of lung cancers eventually took my grandfather and I feel horrible cause I choose to go on a vacation instead of going to see him on his death bed. I need a kleanx.. I feel so self-centered, and my decision was disrespectful. October 02 Packing my bags...I’m packing my bags in anticipation for a trip to Redmond bound for a Windows Vista product tour at Microsoft. This PT will consist of 50 Vista Beta Testers from all over the globe. Myself, I’ll be traveling a short distance by Greyhound Bus from Surrey, BC Canada departing Wednesday Oct the 4th. This will be my second time to Seattle but my first to Redmond, there will be an NDA to sign and agree to before the tour so needless to say I’m very stoked to see what’s in store from Microsoft for Vista. :D With an Internet Café I should be able to update this blog with event that are not related to the purpose of the NDA so be sure to check back for updates. So I’m slowly packing now, let's see: a toothbrush, pit stick and clean underwear… that should be good? heh heh ~Jason September 22 White & Nerdy by Al Yankovic
August 20 Blogging today via Windows Live Writer (Beta)Read about it here: http://windowslivewriter.spaces.live.com/ It's a sad ordeal and she'll be missed. 15 years ago there was a litter of 5 kittens, all had to be bottle feed. Their mother had died days following their birth and fortunately they all survived the ordeal. Some of the rascals went on to good homes and two stayed. Sisters, Julie & Stevia stayed and lived long joyful well-feed lives. Both cats are now missed, Julie pasted on last year and Stevia within the recent 24 hours. They are missed. May 26 WinHEC 2006 ~ Beta2 bits delayed...Waiting another day didn't seem so bad after I thought about it, all good things come with patients, right?
After the WinHEC 2006 Keynotes were delivered I had a chance to explore Seattle, seen the city from up top on the Space Nettle which was nice despite the clouds on the horizon. Later treated myself to my Achilles heal at the Cheese Cake Factory, one oh so heavenly Mocha and a Tiramisu Cheese Cake, this got me a little wired.
Monday and Tuesday went very well, Wednesday on the other hand... I woke up with a massive migraine Wed morning and the Tylenol wasn't too quick to help. First thing was to checked out of the hotel, next I brought myself to the convention center. From there I just chilled on level 2 where it was pretty quite in the art gallery.
At noon I was feeling better and was geared and ready to pwn peeps in Half-Life 2 at the 'Windows Gaming Zone' were 45 of us were to compete for a $6,500 Alienware system. My result was 6th place and of course only the top 5 people moved on to the next round, such was my luck. From there I stopped by the Intel and Vista lounge, then into the exhibit hall to say farewell to a few people and grabbed some lunch.
On the way out I got my bags and waited at registration for the delayed DVDs to arrive, with two hours until my bus departs I await... eventually, I see an announcement go up... it reads as follows:
Oh, no $h!t, I didn't have a diamond. I checked 3 or 4 times... nothing, no diamonds, moons stars hearts and/or even clovers. Okay, I admit it, I was tempted to forge that diamond symbol, even offering cash for someone's CDs crossed my mind but I quickly came to my senses.
yada-yada-yada and I'm home now and with B2 at 83% complete or rather 17% incomplete, but finally.
Regardless of everything that went wrong yesterday, I'm so glad I attended for what all went right. I did leave without the next Vista build DVDs, but I'm grateful to have met people from all part of the world, and of many walks of life.
WinHEC 2006 was my first conference convention, and definitely not my last.

[Canadian] March 30 accomplishment of the month...It's been a while since I've posted; I'm about overdue for an entry.
Let's see, for the month of March I've been busy playing with the Feb CTP build of Windows Vista (5308) which has been going great, many thanks to VistaBrian and the wonderful Microsoft MVP Nancy for the nomination.
I should announce one of my accomplishments of this month, I'm happy to say, for the whole month of March I've been smoke free, my 10-year habit is finally broken, w00t w00t! It's the 30th consecutive day of being smoke free and I thank you all who supported me through it!
Something I unfortunately failed miserably at this month was dieting. Dieting turned out to be a horrible and short lived experience, through I do plan to lose some weight an muscle up I'll first need to find the right program for me.
April is soon upon us, let's hope for another great month.

Updates to the blog you may have noticed:
February 22 Found it!...found the flash driveThis week I found my flash drive buried beneath a pile of dirty socks, you can't imagine what a relief that was.
This morning I received some disappointing news when I awoke to find my climate simulation had corrupted after only 5 days of processing. Not all is lost since my BOINC program had done 7 Trickles which is a 7-year climate model ready for study.
The data from this climate simulation will contribute to the World's Largest Climate Experiment created for the BBC. Today I decided I will return to the SETI@home project on my main PC until I can learn more about the problem which caused the work unit to end prematurely with the climate experiment.
